Hadoop Summit 2015

Session

Data Warehousing in Hadoop

Abstract

How can we take advantage of the veritable treasure trove of data stored in Hadoop to augment our traditional data warehouses? In this session, Michelle will share her experience with migrating GoDaddy’s data warehouse to Hadoop. She’ll explore how GoDaddy has adapted traditional data warehousing methodologies to work with Hadoop and will share example ETL patterns used by her team. Topics will also include how the integration of structured and unstructured data has exposed new insights, the resulting business impact, and tips for making your own Hadoop migration project more successful.

Resistance is Futile: What You Need to Know about Big Data

Abstract

The data community is all abuzz about Big Data, and for good reason. Much like Business Intelligence before it, we’re rapidly approaching the point where all information workers should have at least a cursory understanding of what Big Data is and how it applies to their profession.

In this session, Michelle Ufford will introduce Big Data using concrete, real-world examples and will explain why she believes this topic is applicable to everyone. She’ll provide a brief introduction to Hadoop, including the technologies and languages most relevant to analysts. She’ll explore some common use cases and access patterns for analysts using Hadoop, including ad hoc querying and data visualization. Finally, she’ll conclude with Q&A and resources for learning more.

If you’re still trying to understand Big Data and decide if it’s relevant to you, then this is a session you won’t want to miss!

How to Interview a DBA: A Panel Debate

Abstract

There’s a right way to interview a DBA candidate, and a wrong way. And another right way, and maybe two or three more wrong ways. Four SQL Server professionals – each one an experienced interviewer in their own right – will debate the merits of various interviewing techniques.

What’s the best way to conduct a phone screen? Is it possible to tell a knowledgeable candidate from one who is full of it? Do practical tests prove anything? What are the resume red flags? The panel will cover many aspects of these questions and more in this lively session.

Come for the debate, and stick around to put in your opinions and questions in the final Q&A.

SSIS Design Patterns

Abstract

In this full-day session, the “SSIS Design Patterns” (Apress, 2012) author team – Matt Masson, Tim Mitchell, Jessica M. Moss, Michelle Ufford, and Andy Leonard – will describe and demonstrate patterns for package execution, package logging, loading flat file and XML sources, loading the cloud, dynamic package generation, SSIS Frameworks, data warehouse ETL, and data flow performance.

Heaps of Trouble, Clusters of Glory – A Look At Index Internals

Abstract

Indexes are a crucial component of SQL Server, especially in performance tuning, yet many DBA’s don’t fully understand how indexes work. In this in-depth session, Michelle will examine the anatomy of indexes, from how they’re stored to how they get fragmented. And to make our inner geeks happy, she’ll look at page data to show you what’s happening behind the scenes. Topics covered will include index structure, fragmentation and defragmentation, index partitioning, and index filtering. If you’ve ever wondered just *what* goes on in an index, don’t miss this session!

Super Bowl, Super Load – A Look at Performance Tuning for VLDBs

Abstract

Few DBAs have the opportunity to experience a real-life load test in their production environment. Michelle Ufford works for GoDaddy.com, a company that has experienced phenomenal success with its Super Bowl ads. These ads are designed to drive traffic to the company’s websites, which puts the database servers under high load. In her presentation, Michelle will explore the performance tuning techniques that have resulted in an 80% reduction in server response times and allowed her VLDBs to reach rates of 27k transactions per second. Topics will include vertical and horizontal partitioning, bulk operations, table design, and indexing.
